San Francisco California Family Photographer | Palace of Fine Arts
On a quiet day with few visitors at the Palace of Fine Arts, anything is possible. See how we did with a full house!

Daniel McElmury | San Francisco California Family Photographer | Palace of Fine Arts Vika and I arrived early so we could take in the sites for ourselves and find the perfect backgrounds for the Zar Family photo session. The palace of Fine Arts has no shortage of beauty. It was build in 1915 to house works of art and one of 10 palaces built for the Panama-Pacific Exposition (Worlds Fair) and is the last building standing. The weather was true to San Francisco form with a mix of sun and clouds and wind. Every San Franciscan know to always carry a light jacket, just on case the temperature drops.

Olga, Dean and Lil’ Zoe Skye are one of my favorite families to photograph. They are always up for anything and they trust me to do my thing. Plus they are always wells dressed, which adds to the greatness of their images. The last time I photographed Zoe, she was just a little too young for me to really bond with but this time, we became insta-friends with her. We joked and laughed and I even got a few hugs! When you can gain the trust and the admiration of the little one’s, your images show it. A huge thanks to my wife Viktoriya for being my assistant on all my photo sessions!

Surprise Marriage Proposal | Kirby Cove, Marin Headlands

Cota Proposal 1

It was a beautiful sunny day on the beach at Kirby Cove in the Marin Headlands. There was a cool breeze in the air and the skies were blue with clouds racing over my head. I sat in my beach chair skimming through a book I had no intention of reading. I wasn’t there to read. I was there to secretly capture Andrew’s surprise marriage proposal to his longtime sweetheart Paola. When they arrived Andrew texted me and said, “Ready when you are.” As an unsuspecting Paola stood facing the San Francisco Bay, Andrew walked up to her, got down on one knee and professed his love by asking her to be his wife. It was a magical moment. Time stood still and the only thing that was happening on earth was Andrew and Paola. Their whimsical engagement session followed.

Daniel McElmury Photography Maternity Photographer San Francisco Bay Area

A couple weeks ago, Vika suggested we go cherry picking. Cherries are in season right now and she didn’t want to miss the small window of opportunity to pick them while they were ripe and delicious. So this past weekend we drove from our apartment in San Francisco to Bloomfield Cherries in Brentwood, CA. Her friend Danielle and family were there the weekend before and said they picked some amazing cherries. I was especially excited because it was an opportunity to do a fun and casual maternity session for her. And at 36 weeks, it’s practically baby season in our household!

When we arrived, we grabbed our bucket and headed in. There were a lot of people there but the farm was so big it felt like we had the place to ourselves. The rows of cherry trees seemed to go on forever. Vika was dressed super cute with a pink long sleeve top, blue jeans and black shell-toes. She insisted on wearing her little straw hat and I wasn’t about to win any battle over it, so I just went along. In the end, her hat was a fun addition to her wardrobe.

The cherry farm was like a photographers gold mine with beautiful rows of trees, blue skies, a warm sun and insta-props I could incorporate in the images. Actually it was like the sun was playing hide and seek with us, dipping behind the clouds and popping it’s head out. Time felt like it stood still while we were there and I loved photographing Vika just doing her thing. She even took hold of the camera and captured a few fun portraits of me!

I’m super pleased with Vika’s images and I learned something valuable that I will try and incorporate into all my future sessions. I’m going to allow myself to play more and let moments unfold naturally like this did with Vika.

Cota Family Maternity | Santa Clara University, CA

The Cota’s decided that Santa Clara University would be the perfect place for their maternity session. After all, that is where Germaine and Tony met. Little Oliver’s energy and comfort around us in such a big place was a blessing. He remembered us from a family session we did with them last year and I was honored to make “Uncle” Danny status with him! Vika was “That Girl” and I think there may have been a little crush there. The sun was bright in the sky just behind a thin layer of clouds making the light a beautiful even tone all around. The cherry blossoms had bloomed in just one week since Vika and I visited the site for our pre-session site visit. We captured so many sweet moments, we couldn’t stop smiling at each image as we edited them in post Production. What I loved most about the experience was something new that we’re doing this year. I got a chance to go to their home and play them a slideshow to music of all their images. I printed each image in proof size at 4×6 and we picked their favorite 15 images for print. I can’t wait to go back and deliver their finished images.

Our JourneyOur Journey & Looking Ahead

With love and support from our family and friends, Vika and I are so lucky to be able to call ourselves professional photographers. Your friendship, loyalty and word of mouth referrals have helped us to triple our clientele in just 2 1/2 years from 16 photo sessions in 2013, to 33 in 2014 and 52 in 2015. It has been and amazing experience. We’ve learned so much about ourselves, photography, and made some great friends in you along the way.

Looking back, it’s hard to believe we had a photo session almost every weekend last year while maintaining full time jobs. A typical week for us looked something like this. Each weekend we either had a photo session or spent each day editing photos. Monday through Friday we went to our regular 9-5 jobs. Then we would come home and spend hours editing more photo sessions, attempting to correspond efficiently with clients, and trying to keep up with our social media and blogging.  Doing normal things like cooking dinner, cleaning the apartment, going on a walk or a date, and spending time with family became harder and harder to do. There came a point where we were straight up burned out. One day we looked at each other and said, “Something has got to change!“.

We couldn’t go another year booking ourselves solid while working full time and still maintain our sanity. So we made a few decisions.

  1. We’re slowing down. In 2016 we’re moving away from high volume and towards higher quality. That means we can focus more energy on each client, giving us time to design a beautiful photo session with fun concepts and ideas that will ultimately improve what you hired us for… the photographs.
  2. Products. We’re partnering with the industries top labs to bring you the highest quality and unique photographic products available. Why? Because we believe the best way to serve our clients is to present you with beautiful professionally finished work for your home; not just a digital file that will live and probably die on your hard drive.
  3. Education. We’re re-investing in our business by going to photography workshops and mentoring with industry leading photographers. We’re not only learning how to take better pictures, we’re learning how to run a better business.
  4. We’re Legal. Daniel McElmury Photography is now an S-Corporation, with liability insurance to boot. We’re doing the right thing to ensure our business is sustainable so we can continue doing what we love to do for all of you.

We can’t wait to work with you this year and give you the customer experience that you deserve when you hire a photographer.  Thank you, Danny & Vika

Valentine

Valentine’s Day Mini Sessions with Daniel McElmury Photography | San Francisco, California

Vika and I organized our first ever mini photography session event for Valentine’s Day. We rented a cozy space in the Richmond District and scheduled six short sessions throughout the day. Four of the six sessions were with our lovely return clients and two were with our awesome new clients.  We made all our own props including bow and arrows, paper mailbox and hearts, and we even found an old typewriter for the kids to type love notes on. I think I was crawling on the floor more than they were! Each kiddo had their own distinct personality and it was awesome to interact with them to get the shots. Besides capturing each moment with my camera, I’m also excited to be giving each family printed products that were included in the packages they selected. I’m a firm believer in printing your photos. There is something amazing about holding a photo in your hand and passing it around the table. This is why I do family photography. For future generations to discover. I’m not so sure a USB stick or disc will be accessible in 50-100 years, but a printed photo sure will! For our first mini, I think it was a huge success! I had to ice my knees, but it was all worth it, and we’d gladly do it again! Thank you to all the families who came out and trusted us to capture some beautiful Valentine’s Day memories, not only for their kids, but for their kids and grandchildren to cherish as well.

Anonymous - All the children in these Valentine photos looks so cute and happy and like they feel very special. You two make these great shots happen because you are the people that you are. Your wonderful selves come through in your photos. You care, and you love what you do, and you just “know how” and “feel how”. Looking at these photos makes me happy, and I’m sure the parents feel it even more. After-all, you are photographing their most loved person in the world.ReplyCancel

Gamble Garden Palo Alto, CA | San Francisco Family Photographer | Daniel McElmury Photography

The Mikshansky’s are a fun loving energetic family who met me at the pristine Gamble Garden in Palo Alto. From the beginning, It didn’t take much coercing to get little Aiden to hang out in a bucket or chill in a chair for his pictures. Even Grandma go in on the action! I love coming to a photo session with a vision in mind. It’s all thanks to the Mama for taking a little time to talk with me and brainstorm for ideas. I’m really looking forward to working with them again soon.  I know we’ll come up with an amazing idea together!

During her newborn session, Ariana slept like a little baby… wait, she is a little baby. A beautiful little angel at that! Mom provided us with those cute wings to place on her back. My wife and photo assistant Vika handmade the little crown. Dad was oh so careful to make sure Ariana was always comfortable in his arms. Click here here to see Rose and Jiyan’s Maternity session.
